How it works

There is only one key to remember

You use the Alt key immediately to the right of the space bar.

CtrlWinAltSpaceAltthis oneWinMenuCtrl

It records only while you hold this key down

The steps

1Hold

Press and hold the right Alt key

2Speak

It records only while you hold the key. A waveform appears at the bottom of the screen

3Let go

After about a second, the text appears wherever your cursor is

While you talk, a small waveform sits at the bottom of the screen. If it is moving, your voice is being picked up.

Worth knowing

Esc
When you misspeak

Press Esc while you are still talking and that recording is thrown away. Nothing is typed.

📝
When names come out wrong

Add company names and personal names to the user dictionary in Settings. XAIV will lean towards those words.

When you want it faster

If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, add the GPU build from the Models screen — it runs several times faster.

⌨️
When you want a different key

Change it under Hotkey in Settings. The app needs restarting after you change it.

🖥️
Closing the window does not quit it

XAIV keeps running in the system tray at the bottom right of your screen. To quit properly, right-click the tray icon and choose Quit.

If something isn't working

Nothing happens when I press the key

Check that the app is running — look for the microphone icon in the system tray at the bottom right. You also need to be signed in on the Account screen.

The waveform moves but no text appears

On the Models screen, check that both the recognition engine and a model have been downloaded. If either is missing, XAIV can record but cannot produce text.

The text goes into the wrong place

The text goes wherever your cursor is at the moment you release the key. If you click another window before you finish speaking, it lands there instead.

My voice is coming through too quietly

Check your microphone level in Windows settings. If the waveform barely moves while you talk, the microphone is not picking you up.
